I have a in Highland Park that was built in 1923. I have several areas that need the mortar repaired, but I was told I have lime mortar used on my home instead of the newer verion of mortar. Is there a way that you or I can tell what the make up is of my mortar, and are you experienced in the type of restoration?

This is a great question, many historic buildings and homes are damaged by repair mortars that do not contain lime. There are several reputable companies around the country that do this type of testing. They scientifically breakdown sample mortar from the building and after analysis, they can tell you exactly what the make us is and how you can reproduce it. Unfortunately this isn't a cheap service. You would have to contact them to determine cost. One such company is The U.S. Heritage Group located in Chicago, IL. They provide everything necessary to develop a total historic mortar solution, custom mortar matching, pre-blended lime mortars, stone repair mortars, etc. Historically accurate mortar should always incorporate the original ingredients which, before 1931, almost always included lime putty.

Here is their web site. http://www.usheritage.com/

Thanks for the question
